My Quilts

My first attempt at quilting was a Wedding Ring quilt that my grandmother made for me for my 14th birthday. It was a wonderful quilt but sat in a drawer for years. I would pull it out every once in a while just to take a look at it. Finally when I was in my 40's I decided it was time to do something about it. I pulled it out of the drawer and made up my mind that it wasn't going to quilt itself. I was going to do it myself.

What a wonderful world opened up to me as I learned. I went to the library and checked out every book that was there that could help me develop the skill I needed to finish my wonderful quilt.

Now, I don't believe in magic but........... I was developing a sense that my grandmother was still with me and so was my mother, both of which had died many years before. I could see parts of my dresses that Mother had made for me when I was a child. I remembered so vividly the pajamas that my grandmother had given me for Christmas one year, That fabric was there. I remembered the apron's that Grandma wore and seeing the tiny squares brought floods into my memory.

As I quilted around each tiny piece of the fabric the closeness returned to my for my mom and grandma that I could only shed tears for before. The quilt has become so much a part of me and my family they request to use it each time they are ill. And there is nothing like the warmth of that quilt. Not so much in physical warmth but the warmth of knowing that my Mom and Grandma are still with me with a warmth that only a mom and grandmother can endow on a child.

You know, I do believe that, Grandma in her wisdom, knew that she shouldn't quilt that top for me as someday, I would need to have that love refreshed as it certainly was with that wedding ring quilt that I we still use today.
